Roma plays Lazio in the Coppa Italia final tonight, and the district of Testaccio is bracing itself for a particularly poignant clash. The TIM Cup has brought together the city’s fiercest rivals for the final match, taking place at 18.00 in the Stadio Olimpico. Extra police are on standby after the stabbings that took place on April 8 in the last derby encounter. It’s been a disappointing season for both of the capital’s teams so there’s more than pride to play for in this match – there’s a place in the Europa League at stake.
If Roma wins, as tradition dicates, fans will amass in Piazza Santa Maria Liberatrice in Testaccio – as in so many districts of Rome – to enjoy a moment of celebration after the game. Even if you don’t listen out for the result on the radio or television, if you’re in Testaccio tonight you’ll know the score by midnight, based on the count of scooters zipping through the streets proudly waving Roma flags and scarves.
