Trattoria da Neno is a modern bar and eatery in elegant Via Ravenna in the Piazza Bologna district of Rome.
It’s an ideal destination for date night or a an outing with a group of friends, offering an ample menu and imaginative evenings featuring live music and culinary themes.
I visited right at the end of July, to catch an evening in which chef Luca Baldacci created an original menu in collaboration with Abruzzo brewery Birrificio Maiella.
This was an opportunity to not only try different dishes paired with craft beer, but also sample recipes cooked with beer – and the resulting menu was a tasty, original journey into local and seasonal ingredients.
Live music from singer Sara Jane Ceccarelli created a great atmosphere in this stylish, neighbourhood restaurant.
Trattoria da Neno combines a cool, hipster vibe with a lively bar and modern, trattoria food.
The other star of the evening was Birrificio Maiella, which brought some of its best ales to join in the party.
The creative menu was designed to be paired with the guest beers and also included beer in every single course – no mean feat!
A photo of the menu is shown below to give you a sense of the evening. However, remember that this was a one-off so if you visit Trattoria da Neno on a regular night, you won’t find these exact dishes.
Starting with the drinks – I couldn’t resist pairing the first course with a hoppy, easy drinking APA from Birrificio Maiella by the name of Isabel. This was the perfect choice for anyone who likes hoppy IPAs and their slightly smoother American cousins.
It was time to taste the food, and the menu opened with a tartare of prized Fassona beef, combined with egg and mustard, and served with potato chips, powdered green olives and a gel made from beer (€16). This was a strong starter which whetted the appetite.
Next we moved onto a beer-based risotto, with sausage powder and broccoli crisps. This was a really tasty first course with subtle and tasty flavours (€12).
The main course continued down the robust flavour route, combining beef rib eye with crispy shallots, artisan lard and fresh figs (€20). This was a super medley of flavours, although my beef was a little overcooked for my medium-rare request.
Dessert was a peanut sauce and ice-cream sandwich dressed with a beer and barley foam. Not too sweet, this really hit the spot, continuing the fun beer theme (€10).
All in all, my impressions were good: the evening, topped with live music, felt like a real night out, and tasting for the beers in the food as well as pairing beers with the menu added a fun gastronomic twist.
The prices are on the middle to high side, but this is more than just a quiet dinner out, and really fits into the event dining category.
