Wine tour Rome: review
I recently joined a group Rome wine tasting tour with Luxe Associates Travel and really enjoyed my afternoon with Amy, Marta and the crew.
Marta, the trained, Piemonte-born sommelier who leads the Rome wine tasting experience, speaks perfect English so can answer all your questions about Italian wine.
The Luxe Associates Travel Rome wine tasting is held at an enoteca, a wine store and bar, called Divin Ostilia, which is conveniently located near the Colosseum so it’s easy to reach. This wood-lined, wine-lined Aladdin’s cave is patronised by locals in the know and is the perfect escape from the heat or cold, any time of year!
Marta begins the wine tour displaying a handy map of Italy, detailing the main and lesser-known producers, grapes and wines which make this country synonymous with great wine. Then the tasting kicks off with a glass of bubbly and a gentle introduction from everyone in the group to get started.
Wine tasting Rome with Luxe Associates Travel
This Rome wine tasting includes six glasses of wine possessing very differing characteristics. We started with a prosecco and finished with a sweet passito from Pantelleria, passing through whites and reds of varying style and body from up and down the length of Italy.
Marta is extremely knowledgeable, and somehow manages to get through the (brief!) history of Italian wine – which actually includes over 300 varieties of grape.
Learning how to pair the right cheeses with each wine is also a big part of the wine tasting – especially since class members are able to express their own views (this is not an exact science!)
Rome wine tasting: prices and info
All in all, this is a Rome wine tasting which absolutely flies by. We were told to allow about 2.5 hours but we ended up staying more than 3 hours to get the full story – and finish the wine in excellent company!
